LUGARES PROPIOS. Rituales estivales en Lo Pagán. Un proyecto de Mar Sáez

05/02/2021 - 13/03/2021

PLACES CLOSE TO MY HEART
Summer rituals in Lo Pagán

A stroll to the windmill, a family day out to the mud baths, getting to know visitors from other parts of the world that never failed to surprise us for reaching this corner of the map, and of course, moments like filling with mud the bottle of fresh cold water that we just drank up so we could spare some mud at home. I don’t know if the mud from the area really did have healing properties, but the mere act of socialising with other families was already therapeutic for us. What I definitely do know is that each summer of my childhood in Lo Pagán was all about rituals.

Over the last three summers I have photographed locals and visitors that have embraced our warm tradition. However, 2020 has been different : the mutiliated sea cannot hide the cross it has to bear any longer. It will not be easy to forget the scenes from 12th October 2019, when thousands of fish and shellfish drew their last breaths in tidal pools without oxygen. A slow motion photograph; an instant x-ray of an ecological collapse that could have been avoided.

The Mar Menor, Europe’s great salt water lagoon, destroyed by pollution and rampant urban development leaving behind only the last traces of an ecosystem dying on the seabed and the raw pain of those that share its  suffering: the people that love this place and still remember how summers were once upon a time in Lo Pagán.
